Maybe it's just me, but my family respects what I do for a living, from home. They also appreciate the income it generates...and I don't see any shame in working from home, either.

I think it helps to have a separate office room that's dedicated to professional work, to have set times you work / don't work, and to always make time for the things you care about.

Well those are a mirror of the problems faced at work. The difference is family respect and understand the need to avoid disturbing you whereas work colleagues, whether motivated by a selfish need for you to solve their problems or just want to be friendly, waste your time even more so.

I have sectioned off part of our apartment, that is my space for working, everyone knows to stay away from me when I'm in there unless its for something urgent.

I don't enter this space at the weekends or at night, in the mornings I getup shower, shave & get dressed for work, this gives me the feeling of actually "going to work" which gets me into a different headspace & helps me focus.

I don't sit down in front of the TV during the working day & try to stay away from the rest of our apartment which also helps.

I have an office I split with 3 other self-employed guys and its great. Need to get away from the girlfriend? Go to the office. Too hot? Feeling lazy? Go to the office.

I agree with both points of view... the key is to have space dedicated to work either at home or in an office. As long as you have the ability to "get in the zone" then your all set.

I have a wife and twin toddlers at home so its tuff to get into work mode. For me its more then just family respecting your what you do.. I also fight the urge to help my wife with with the kids or just spend some time with them. Going to an office outside my home helps me stay focused when I really need to be.

lol - great comic. I know I need to find an office when someone knocks on my door and I have to put my pants on before answering.

I run a shared office space in NYC (sunshine suites) but recently moved to Israel and started working out of my house. Best thing I ever did for my relationship with the gf was find an office in Israel!

Having respect and being able to understand what we go through as entrepreneurs are different. My family respect me but they don't necessarily understand the nature, struggles and demands of my work. That is something I have come to accept and learn to live with even after explaining it to them countless times.
